JUNEAU & TRACY ARM FJORD
| On the way back to town from the raft trip I got a quick photo of the governor's mansion. |
|
| Main Street, Juneau. |

| Believe it or not, this is the state capitol building. No dome or anything. It looks like an office building or a bank. |
|
| A photo of downtown Juneau at the intersection of Front and Seward. |

| An olden day photo of the same corner. Looks pretty much the same. |

| More downtown Juneau. |

| The Red Dog Saloon. I think there is some history behind the place, but I believe it had changed locations several times and doesn't really look all that historic. I think it's mostly for the tourists these days. |

| A memorial to Three Dog Night. No, seriously, these are the founders of Juneau. There's Joseph Juneau, Chief Kowee and Richard Harris, whom you will all remember as Dumbledore from the Harry Potter films. |

| The mountains are a nice backdrop to the city. |

| A statue dedicated to the hard rock miners of days gone by. |

| A statue of Patsy Ann, the Official Greeter of Juneau, Alaska. Deaf from birth, she somehow sensed when an incoming ship was about a half-mile away and had an uncanny ability to determine the dock where it would moor. She died in 1942 and her coffin was lowered into Gastineau Channel near this statue. |

| Remnants of mining activity in the mountains surrounding Juneau. |

| Ravens (or crows, I couldn't tell the difference) landed on the aft deck looking for food. |
![]() |
| How about hitting some balls? |
![]() |
| For some reason the ship flew the Alaskan flag. I'm not sure why. |

| After leaving Juneau, the ship took a trip into Tracy Arm fjord. This is Sumdum Glacier. |
![]() |
| Look out! An iceberg! |
![]() |
| These broke off from a glacier. You can tell by the blue color of the ice. |
![]() |
| More snow melt falls. |
![]() |
| The fjords were carved out by giant glaciers a long time ago. |
![]() |
| More mountains and ice. |
![]() |
| Those brown spots are seals on the ice. |

| This was as far as we got. Because there were so
many little icebergs in the water, the ship could not navigate all the way
up the fjord to Sawyer Glacier, which was a little disappointing because it
is pretty amazing. Find photos on the web and see for yourself. That's the
only way I got to see it. Click here for 19 peaceful seconds of mountains, falls and ice. |
