THURSDAY
From Beaches to Mountains to Desert
| J: Prehistoric
elephants stuck in a lake in front of an office building on Wilshire Boulevard. Really,
this is the La Brea Tar Pits. P: The picture's a little blurry. J: That's because it's prehistoric. P: Huh? J: Ahem, let's just move on, shall we? |
|
| P: We go from
elephants to the back end of a Mercedes? J: Well, no. There is an office building ahead of some fame or infamy, depending on your point of view. It's the home of Flynt Publications, as in Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler and other high-class masturbation publications. It just happened to be on my way to the ocean, so I snapped a shot. They didn't have a tour, which is just as well. I hear the floors are all sticky. |
|
| J: The Pacific Ocean. P: How do we know it's not really the Atlantic? J: Because the Atlantic would be on the other side. |
|
| J: Muscle Beach on Venice Beach. You know this place. It's where those muscle-bound fellows pump things. It was a little early for them, though. They must sleep later than 9:30 a.m. |
|
| J: A fairly famous
sign you may have seen in movies or on the telly. There were many bums sleeping in the
little park between the street and the beach. In fact, there were an awful lot of vagrants
all over the L.A. area. P: I think we're supposed to call them "homeless." J: Like I care. I call them bloody annoying beggars. |

| J: There is a little
amusement park on the pier called Pacific Park. But that's not the only reason I took this
picture. There is a sign for an electric vehicle charging station. California has to be
the only place in the country where you'll find electric vehicle charging stations. I saw
three of them in the six blocks from the post office to the pier. Probably because those
stupid electric cars can only go a couple of blocks before running down. P: Like, we have to, you know, save the Earth or something. J: Shut up. |
|
| J: Malibu Canyon. At least I think it is. I was on Malibu Canyon Road. This is not very far from the beach and Pepperdine University. |
|
| J: Mister Gorbachev,
tear down this wall! P: Ich bin ein Berliner! J: Right city, wrong president. This is a part of the old Berlin Wall on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley. Visitors can see things like Ronnie's letterman's sweater from Eureka College, Nancy's inaugural ball gown, and a re-creation of the Oval Office. |
|
| J: I had a great drive through the Angeles National Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains. Lots of fun winding mountain roads. On the other side of the mountain range is the Mojave Desert. So in one day I traveled from the city to the beach through the mountains to the desert and back to the city. As a matter of fact, I crossed over the San Andreas fault line twice this day. Unfortunately I saw no visible landmark to know exactly where it was and take a picture. I kind of hoped there would be a great crack in the ground or roads that have gone askew. |
