DAY 3 ![]()
HÔTEL DES INVALIDES
| The tower that Gustave built. |
![]() |
| As you can see, the sky was starting to clear after a morning of clouds and rain. |
![]() |
| A look up from directly beneath. You can't see all the way up because of the green netting. I guess it's there to keep things from dropping from the top and knocking people silly. |
![]() |
| The cars that take visitors to the top run up the legs of the structure. |
![]() |
| There was a newlywed Japanese couple having their picture taken in from of the Eiffel Tower. So I took a picture of them having their picture taken in front of the Eiffel Tower. |
![]() |
| École Militaire or Royal Military Academy. |
![]() |
| Okay, so it was €1.38 per liter of regular. There are 3.785 liters in a gallon. That makes it €5.22 per gallon. The exchange rate was approximately $1.18 to €1 at the time so that means a gallon of gas cost $6.16 per gallon. So quit you bitching about paying two and a quarter. |

|
Les Invalides was founded by Louis XIV in
1670. It was an old soldiers home and was finished in 1676. There is still a
hospital on the grounds. Many of the arms used by the mob when it attacked the Bastille on July 14, 1789 were taken from Les Invalide that morning. Despite resistence by the posted sentries, they were overwhelmed by the mob which finally entered the underground rifle storehouse. |

| This is Napoleon's Tomb. His body was returned from St. Helena to France in 1840. |
![]() |
| Construction of the dome began in 1706. |
![]() |
| The alter in the dome church. |
![]() |
| There is a soldier's church behind the one with the big dome. This one is adorned with flags from French military campaigns. |
![]() |
| I don't know who owns this tank, but he picked a hell of a parking spot. |
![]() |
| A recreation of Lafayette's office. You remember Lafayette, right? Good, then I won't explain. |
![]() |
| Emperor Napoleon in full imperial regalia. |
![]() |
| Here he is a slightly less happy mood. |
![]() |
| Nazi stuff. Bastards! |
![]() |
| Hurrah! The war is over in Europe thanks to the Brits and Americans and Russians (and the French a little bit). |
![]() |
| The tower at night. Damn that's a good photo. |
![]() |
| This was my view of the Gare du Nord while I ate dinner... |
![]() |
| ...here. I was originally going to stay in a hotel across from the station, but with all the noise on this street I'm glad I didn't. |
