WEDNESDAY / THURSDAY - TOKYO

NARITA, CHUO-KU
This is the gate at O'Hare from which my flight to Tokyo was supposed to leave. It was several hours before scheduled departure, so there was still a lot of snow on the ground. It was also several hours before the flight was cancelled due to mechanical problems.

This is the plane I actually took to Tokyo. Since they fit two flights of passengers on the one plane, it was a little full.

On the ground in Narita Airport. After getting through immigration, I ran downstairs to...

...the JR East Travel Service Center before it closed. I bought a ticket on the Narita Express into town. The train trip took a little less than an hour to Tokyo Station.

There's the train.

It wasn't very full at that hour.

I finally got to the Hotel Kitcho at around 8:45 p.m. Mine was a small single room. I didn't really need much more and the price (¥7000 per night) was just right.

The bathroom was tiny, but actually bigger than I expected. The ceiling in the shower was 6' 0" high. Unfortunately I am 6' 1/2" tall, so I had to duck a little bit or get shampoo all over the top of the shower.

The neighborhood where the hotel is located is quite nice. There is a greenway on the street in front. The hotel is on the right of the photo and there is a statue of a Japanese fellow on the left.

A local street early in the morning.

This is the local 7-Eleven. I got breakfast here almost every day. Also, 7-Elevens in Japan have ATMs that accept foreign cards.

Very near the Suitengūmae station is the Suitengū shinto shrine. You can see the little woman on her way to the shrine to pray.
![]() |
And there she is in a big bow.

A bunch of little trees in dishes.

Waiting on the train in the Suitengūmae subway station.
![]() |
The train wasn't too crowded at around 8:00 a.m. But it was a short ride from Suitengūmae to Otemachi.
