METROPOLIS - CHERRY CREEK - ELY

Monday morning and back on the road. Last bit of interstate until Thursday.
When I rented the car there was a sign up behind the counter saying that driving on unpaved roads was prohibited. I don't know how anyone drives in rural Nevada without getting on an unpaved road or two. This one leads to the former town of...
Metropolis. The town was established in 1910 as an agricultural community. In 1912 a rail spur was built as the population grew to 700. A request for water from the nearby Bishop Creek Dam, built from six and a half million brick remnants of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was denied, thus dooming the town. Lack of water, a typhoid epidemic, rabbits and Mormon crickets led to the town's demise.
Ruins of an old hotel.
The entry arch to the old school.
The school basement.

Not much else out there. It was starting to snow when I got there.
The road to Cherry Creek.

It's one of those towns where there are ruins from the boom days mixed with modern structures.
It's the same old story. A mine is opened. A town is established. It booms when the mine thrives. An economic downturn drives away the population. The population of Cherry Creek in the 2010 census was 72.
I don't care much about the current homes, just the old ones that are barely standing.
It must be weird living in a town with ruins like this just down the street or even next to your house.
The schoolhouse still stands.
Don't know what this was.
Drove through the town of McGill and snapped a quick photo of the Cyprus Hall building, whatever that was.
*DUPLICATE PHOTO WARNING*

Spent some time in Ely. I stayed the night at the Hotel Nevada back in 2005.
*DUPLICATE PHOTO WARNING*

No overnight stay in Ely this time around.
The building in the center used to be the Capitol Theatre.
It wouldn't be a city in Nevada without a casino.
I'm not sure Annie's Restaurant, Casino and Lounge is still open.
I do like a nice ghost sign.
A couple of old signs, one has held up better than the other.
The White Pine County Courthouse, built in 1908.
