SAN FRANCISCO II
| It's still daylight at this point as we approach the dock. The time is around 4:30 p.m. |
| Angel Island is one of the larger islands in the bay. It is home to a state park. There is little more on the island than nature. At night, Angel Island is black and sits like a great hole in the bay. |
| This was once a chapel built onto a guardhouse when the island was used by the military for its deserters. This was before control was transferred from the War Department to the Department of Justice. |
| We are now in the prison itself. Here is the visiting room. There are small windows through which visitors can see inmates. |
| Here's the view down the cell block. This was known as Broadway. At the end is Times Square. I guess because there is a clock down there. |
| There was a famous escape attempt in 1962 by Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin. These are the brothers' cells. They chipped away at the vents at the back of the cells to allow their escape and made dummy heads for the bunks to delay detection of their absence. They managed to make it out of the building and into San Francisco Bay. They were never found, dead or alive. If you've seen the movie Escape From Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood, that's the story of this escape. |

| It's starting to get dark. |

| Here is a tunnel circa 1886. A dark tunnel on a prison island at night can be kind of creepy. |

On the wall you can see writing from the seizure of the then unoccupied island by Indian activists from November 1969 to June 1971. In June 1970, several historic buildings were burned. The authorities said it was arson. The Indians claimed it was done by government saboteurs. It may have been accidental. Public sentiment turned against the Indians and the island was reclaimed by federal marshals after nineteen months of occupation. |
