STRATFORD-UPON-AVON TO OXFORD
Another nice breakfast by the window. Yes, scrambled eggs, toast and tea again.

I wanted to see the university town of Oxford on our way south to the coast, so we stopped for a while.

The County Hall is adjacent to Oxford Castle. Oxford Castle is old, but the County Hall is newer built in 1841 to look like an old castle.

Next to the County Hall and adjacent to the castle is this castle mound.

When I envisioned Oxford University I pictured something more like our universities with a defined campus and college buildings. Oxford is not like that. It basically encompasses a large area that includes normal city streets with normal things like shops, pubs and hotels with colleges located in various locations.

St. John's College was closed because they were filming something that day.

According to Wikipedia, Balliol College was founded around 1263 and produced three former British Prime Ministers.

Trinity College was open but they wanted to charge a few quid to get in. I'm not sure what there would have been inside to see, so I just took a photo through the gate.

Walking down Catte Street. Nothing particularly interesting to see here...

...except when you turn and look left and see the Hertford Bridge or as it is also known the Bridge of Sighs. I don't think it has any particular significance other than looking kind of neat. It's really just a pedestrian bridge connecting two parts of Hertford College.

The Radcliffe Camera was closed. It is a library building built in 1748.

The Warden and the College of the Souls of All Faithful People Deceased in the University of Oxford is better known by its shorter name, All Souls College.

Yep, it's another church. This is the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin.

An old grave in the floor of the church. The marker makes it clear that John Crosse was born on June 18, 1627 but it says he died March 14, 169⅞. What does that mean?
![]() |
Your guess is as good as mine on this. I don't know Latin but I'd say someone died on February 10, 1654.

Sick of looking at stained glass yet? Nah, who could ever get tired of stained glass?
