| The ancient city of Herculaneum is located near the modern city of Ercolano. It's not all that nice a place. Lots of rubbish and graffiti. |

| The site at Herculaneum is much smaller than that of Pompeii, which makes it easier to navigate. |

| Herculaneum was also done in by Vesuvius, but since its burial was different (deeper and under different material) much more of the buildings were left intact. Most obvious is that many of the structures still have second stories. |

| In fact a lot of the same kinds of things that are in Pompeii are in Herculaneum. |

| Here you can see an upper level in a home. I can't tell if this was some sort of walkway |

| I guess it was hard to make a straight line back in Roman times. There are also some little swastikas in there as well. |

| Some floors look better than others. |
 |
| A mosaic of Nettuno and Anfitrite in what is called the House of Nettuno and Anfitrite. (Funny how that works.) I knew Nettuno was Neptune, but the interesting thing is that while reading on the web about Anfitrite (or Amphitrite in English) was that she was a Greek goddess, not Roman. |

| A nice courtyard in a home. It seems that Herculaneum was a richer city than Pompeii. |

| Really nice frescoed walls. It just needs to be remembered that these have been around for two thousand years or so. |

| The anchor, the sea creatures and swimmers are indicative of Herculaneum's location on the coast. |
 |
| There wasn't much telling what these caves were. It may just be excavations into the same volcanic material that buried the city since they are one the same level as the ground. |

| A thermopolium. It would be interesting if there were chains of thermopolium franchises around the empire. McDomitian's? Burger Emperor? Little Caesars? |

| Here's an example of the modern Ercolano. It is a waiting area in the train station with a broken monitor on the wall and graffiti on the walls. |
