UNIONVILLE - PALISADE - ELKO

There are going to be lots of photos on the road. This is one on the road heading eastbound from Sparks. It is an overcast morning.
The dirt road on the way to...
Unionville. There was originally a camp called Dixie established by Confederate miners in the upper part of the Buena Vista Canyon. As more miners from the North moved in, the camp was renamed Unionville.
The Buena Vista Schoolhouse.
There are around twenty people still living in Unionville and there is a B&B there. This is not it.
About seven miles up that dirt road was a town called Star City. The historical marker said there wasn't much there anymore but some crumbling foundations and rusted mill equipment, so I didn't venture in.
One place I attempted to go was Palisade. There was a long and winding road to get there.
The road was rough and I didn't really want to keep going, so I turned around several mile before getting there. So the trip wasn't a total loss, here is a picture of cows grazing on the side of a hill.
There is a California Trail Interpretive Center outside of Elko.
"Seeing the elephant" was a phrase that developed to mean experiencing hardships and challenges on the trek westward that were difficult to describe. So here is a sculpture of an elephant. It is fairly easy to describe.
This was pretty interesting. It is an odometer for a wagon. There are several gears connected to each other that measure the distance travelled.
Damn it, Jebediah! I told you if you played that song one more time I was going shoot you. You'd better start running because I'm loading my rifle.
It might be hard to make out, but there are three modes of transportation there: wagons, train and cars.
Elko has some casinos, but this one seems to be shut down.
Some nice old motel signage.
I took this photo as an example of everything wrong with modern architecture. I hope whomever designed this building suffered a long and painful death.
This might not actually be an old building but it was constructed in the classic Western style.
The Chilton Centennial Tower commemorates the 100th anniversity of the founding of Elko in 1917.
So many towns out west have the town's initial on the side of a nearby mountain. There's an E.
